How the age is counted
A domain's age is counted from the day its registry says it was registered, in whole years, months and days, to today in UTC.
It is the age of the current registration. A name that expired, was deleted and was registered again by somebody else starts again from its new registration date.
Questions about this tool
Where does the registration date come from?
From the registry of the domain's ending, through RDAP, or through WHOIS where an ending has no RDAP. It is the date of the current registration, as the registry keeps it.
Does an older domain rank better in search engines?
Not by itself. Google has said that a domain's age alone does not help it rank. An old name may have more links and history, which is a different thing, and a name that changed hands keeps none of its old standing for certain.
Why is the age shorter than I expected?
If the name expired and was registered again, the registry counts from the new registration. Its history before that is not in the registry's record.
How is a month counted?
From the same day of the month. Where a month has no such day, its last day counts, so a name registered on 31 January is one month old on 28 February, and one registered on 29 February has its birthday on 28 February in other years.
